Over one-million tickets have been sold for the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Canada, putting it on pace to break the event’s attendance record of 1.15 million set by the 1983 tournament in Mexico. The maximum number of tickets available for this year’s 52-match competition is 1.3 million, with attendance of over 200,000 reported through just the first nine games. Canada, living up to its reputation as a North American soccer hotbed, is hoping to parlay the U-20 WC success into hosting future FIFA events, including the 2011 Women’s World Cup.
