David Beckham is hoping that his injured left ankle will be healed enough for him to take the field in this Saturday's much-hyped match against Chelsea.
The English superstar first tweaked the ankle last month while playing for England against Estonia in a Euro 2008 qualifying match. Becks re-aggravated the injury in his final game with Real Madrid and has been rehabbing the injury since then, but was unsure of the progress when asked by reporters during his grand arrival press conference with the Galaxy on Friday."My ankle is still slightly swollen," Beckham said. "I ran on it for the first time about four days ago in London. It felt slightly unstable so there's still a bit of work to do. I'll be getting that done over the next couple of days through massage and treatment and hopefully a bit of running. It should be all right for the game against Chelsea."
Galaxy president and general manager Alexi Lalas showed no concern over his new star player's fitness. "We were very fortunate that David had this time apportioned out so that he was going to get the rest because his injury was something that just required time," he said to Reuters. "We are not going to put him in any situation that puts him at risk and therefore doesn't help the team."
